1. Create a new document in Photoshop, size: 1280×1024, resolution: 300dpi.
2. Using rectangle tool (U) draw two rectangles and fill them with black. (I filled mine with a grey just to see how to arrange them)



3. Rasterize both layers. (Right-click on layer -> Rasterize Layer)
4. Hold Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the first layer to select it.
5. Grab the Gradient Tool (G), select the Radial Gradient option and use these colors #000000 and #1e1e1e. Apply the gradient like shown in the next image.



6. Repeat step 4 and 5 for the second layer.



7. Press Ctrl + D to deselect everything.
8. Open Xara 3D.
9. Write your text. NOTE! Every letter should be written seperately because in Photoshop we want every letter in different layer. Font I used is 100pt (size) Franks Regular (Download)



10. With Selector Tool (V) select all letters and change their color to 10% Black.



11. Keep selecting all letters and using Extrude Tool (E) apply the follwing effect:



12. Now this step is a little bit annoying. We have to change the lightning colors for each letter. You see the 3 points of light for each of the letters. (3 arrows) We have to change the green and blue ones. Double click to change the color. (if anyone knows a better way to do this step please let me know)


Everything should look like this:



13. Another annoying step! For each letter you have to create a new Xara document and drag and drop the letter inside it. After you are done, each document containing a letter has to be exported in PSD format. File -> Export -> Save as: .PSD.

Export settings:
Resolution: 300 DPI and make sure you check: Export just visible objects.

14. Returning to Photoshop! Load all the PSD’s in Photoshop and drag and drop each letter in your document.
    Arrange the letters.



15. We have to make the text smaller. Select all the letters and Free Transform them until you get the desired result.



16. Now lets color things a little bit. Right click a letter layer. Go to Blending Options -> Gradient Overlay and use the following settings:
    The colors that I used for the gradients
    • #feae31 and #efe457
    • #d0f359 and #abdc28
    • #f2835c and #e55b2b
    • #eb3dee and #fc85fb
    • #2cafe3 and #81dbff



17. Duplicate the O, M, A layers, bottom letters. (Select a layer and hit Ctrl + D to duplicate)
18. For every duplicated layer hit Ctrl + T (Free Transform) and do the following:



19. Repeat step 18 for the rest of the bottom letters.



20. Select the duplicated layers, Right Click them and press Merge layers.
21. Add a mask layer on the layer resulted from step 20.



22. Select Gradient Tool and use a Foreground to Background Gradient



23. Apply the gradient as I did:





24. Right click on a letter layer. Choose Blending Options -> Pattern Overlay and apply the following values:



25. After you are done with the pattern. Right-Click on Pattern Overlay and choose Create Layers.



26. Choose Eraser Tool (E) with the size of 20 – 30px and hardness 0% and delete the area pointed in the next image (make sure you have selected the new layer that says Pattern Fill):



27. Repeat the previous step for all the letters.
28. For the smaller text I used Century Gothic (favorite font) with the sizes of: 9, 5 and 4.5pt.

I myself have encountered some problems when I switched from Photoshop to Illustrator. Switching the work-flow can be a pain in the neck and some of these tutorials really can help  get you through it.

Lets begin:

First of all open Xara 3D, write your text, arrange it, select all text layers using Shift + Click. Combine the selected text layers by right clicking them and go to Shapes – Add Shapes. The change the texts color to white.

Apply Extrude tool until you get a desired result and then apply some colors.

When you are ready to continue to Photoshop just go to File – Export – to .psd. Open it in Photoshop.

For the background image I used a paper texture from Bittbox.com.

Select the texture layer and go to Image Adjustments – Levels and move the white and grey cursors like shown in the next image.

Now we are going to apply a grungy effect on the text. Insert another texture like this one.

Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the text layer, but keep selecting the texture layer. Go to Select – Invert Selection and then just press the Del button on your keyboard.

Using Burn Tool with the Range option set to Shadow, and a rounded soft brush, shadow the following areas for a realer result. Apply Drop Shadow with following values:

Duplicate the text layer, apply a black color overlay, go to Filter – Blur – Gaugasian Blur set the blur option to lets say 5, and then free transform it like in the image below:

Now comes your inspiration and of course your resources, I’ve inserted lots of images in the back of the text layer. You can surf the internet and find all kinds of pictures that you can crop and use it in you design.

Now just add your text and you are ready to go.

Creating the background

1. Create a new document and fill the background layer with black.  Press the D key on your keyboard  to ensure that the default foreground (black) and background (white)  colors are being used.

2. Press Alt + F9 this will bring up the Actions Palette, at the buttom of the palette it should be a Create new action button, click it. Name the action as you want and press Record.

3. You are now recording the actions you make in Photoshop, duplicate the current layer and change the blending mode of the new layer to Screen.

4. Create a Clouds filter (Filter-> Render-> Clouds).

5. Add a Mosaic filter (Filter-> Pixelate-> Mosaic) set the cell size to: 50 squares.

6. Apply a Reticulation filter (Filter-> Sketch-> Reticulation) with the following properties:

7. At this point you have to stop the recording from the Actions Palette.

8. Now all you have to do to is select your created action and press play somewhere about 8-10 times … until the screen is fully covered with squares.

9. Merge all the layeres except the background layer.

10. Add a Photocopy filter (Filter-> Sketch-> Photocopy) with the following values:

Detail: 24
Darkness: 1

11. Press Ctrl + I this will invert the colors. Go Image -> Adjustments -> Auto levels … this is going to make things a little different

12. Now we have to add some color to our background you can do this by playing with Hue/Saturation Tool (Ctrl + U), you have to check Colorize first at the buttom of that menu to make things work.  My settings are aprox like this:

Colorize: Checked
Hue: -95
Saturation: -30
Lightness: 0

13. Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl + J) and change the blending mode of the newly created layer to Screen

14. Apply a Gaussian Blur (Fitler-> Blur-> Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 8-10 pixels. Be sure to play with it a little bit until you achieve a desired result

15. Use the Hue/Saturation tool (Ctrl+U) to increase the lightness by 50. And the last thing is to merge the two layers into a single one. YOU JUST FINISHED YOUR BACKGROUND

… IT’S TIME FOR THE TEXT RADIOACTIVE EFFECT

1. Write your text. Use this color: #9ffd60

2. Change the blending mode for the text layer to: Overlay

3. Apply the following Blending Options: Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow.

4. The text looks very flat at this point … to add the finishing touch just Create a new layer just under the text layer … set the blending mode of this layer to Screen. Take a large simple round brush, with hardness of 0% with the color used for the text and start applying in the zone with the text.

1. Create a new document. Find yourself a nice grungy paper texture … I found mine HERE. Insert the picture in your new created document.

2. Rename this layer to: Texture.  Using Free Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd + T) adjust your texture until you get something like this, we don’t need the big darken area, right-click the Texture layer, go to Blending Options, use Color Overlay, set the color to #b38645 and the opacity to lets say about 50%. And the result should look like this:

Now at this point we should create our first block, i’ve could create the blocks in Illustrator (and save some time) but I want to stick only at Photoshop,  it’s quite simple but pay attention: Select Rectangle Tool draw a shape and fill it with black. Rename the shape layer to:  Block1. Now select  Move Tool (V), make sure that Block1 layer is selected, hold down the Alt key and press Down Arrow and Left Arrow on the keyboard. Every time you do this combination Alt + Down Arrow/Left Arrow a copy of the Block1 layer will be made but at 1px distance from the original layer. OK, do this about 20-30 times depending on your document size. And you should get 20+ copies of Block1 Layer and the image looks something like this:

4. Select all the copies, remeber only the copies, right-click them and select Merge Layers, now it should be only 1 layer, rename it to Block1-3D, and now move your original Block1 layer on top of  Block1-3D layer. The result looks like this:

5. On Block1-3D layer apply a gradient overlay (right-click layer, Blending Options, select Gradient Overlay, use colors #000000 to #323232) apply the settings shown in the next image:

6. On Block1 layer (original shape) apply a gradient overlay (right-click layer, Blending Options, select Gradient Overlay, use colors #000000 to #1c1c1c) apply the settings shown in the next image:

7. The block should be finished right now take a look at my result after rotating it (Transform Tool Ctrl + T ):

8. Duplicate the layers Block1 and Block1-3D (duplicate Ctrl+J) and rename the copies to Block2 and Block2-3D. After you duplicated the layers change the colors. For Block2 use a gradient with the following colors: #ff7400 to #ffa443 and for Block2-3D:  #ffa443 to #ff7400.  At last we FINISHED the blocks ! From now on just duplicate , rotate  and transform them as many times you want, and this is the moment to add some text; my result:

9. Add the poster’s title, I added the logo from Smashing Magazine,  add  to it Inner Shadow (right-click layer, Blending Options, Inner Shadow) use the following values:

10.  Well that’s about it. Your design should start looking better and better. Now it’s time to use your imagination. I’ve downloaded a pack of brushes from Brusheezy and I started painting them all over the document. Some brushes, some blending you should get an excelent design.
